Chapter Twelve

Ian sensed Jax’s apprehension as he pulled down the driveway to the Beaumont’s house. What was going on in that strategic-thinking head of hers? She plucked at her khaki pants and pulled at her thick hunter green cable sweater. Was she nervous? Jax nervous? Granted they left his house later than he wanted, arriving at the Beaumonts at around two in the afternoon.

He looked at the brick mansion ahead, the two huge columns supporting the front entryway, the white double door entrance. Jax’s estate rivaled this one. There’s no way the home could intimidate her.

She spoke as he parked the car in front of the house. “Um, we’re not going to be here long enough for the party, right?”

Ian laughed. “Of course we’ll be here for the party. Once a year the vampires get together to par-tay,” he said with a grin.

“I’m not staying for the party.” Jax didn’t bother to smile back.

He noted her fidgeting with her clothes again, then understanding dawned on him. “Jax, don’t worry about not having the right clothes. I called Jocelyn yesterday and told her your approximate size. She said she’d have a few things ready for you to try on.”

Her furrowed brow smoothed out but a she still seemed nervous. When she reached up and touched the chopsticks in her hair while she looked back at the house, Ian realized she was worried about her appearance in general. But she looked dynamite in a dress. He shook his head and smiled. Joss would take good care of her.

He got out of the car and came around to her side only to see she’d already exited the car and had her bag slung over her shoulder.

As they walked into the foyer, Jocelyn entered the room from a side hall, Sabryn and Rana trailing behind her.

“Welcome to our home,” she said to Jax as she grabbed her hands and spread her arms wide. “Ian, you didn’t do her justice. My dear, you are quite a beauty,” she gushed.

Jocelyn herself was quite a beauty. A petite brunette, with striking features, Jocelyn might be over two hundred years old, but she didn’t look a day over forty and everything about her screamed class. From her friendly bearing to her passionate nature, he’d always enjoyed her company.

If Roderick hadn’t claimed her years ago, he might have tossed his hat in the ring. But that was before he met Jax and realized what it meant to meet one’s soul mate—to be so caught up in another person everything that had been so important to you before, paled in comparison.

Ian grinned at the two pink spots that flushed Jax’s cheeks as she murmured a quiet thank you.

“Come in, come in,” Jocelyn said as she led Jax into the formal living room. “You too, ladies,” she called behind her.

Jax glanced back at him, an I-have-no-clue-as-to-why-I-am-here look on her face as Jocelyn continued, “Are you hungry? I’ll have Renee bring you some food…”

Yeah, he’d done the right thing bringing Jax here. Already Jocelyn had taken her under her wing.
